Welcome! We’re glad you are considering ELC as a place to live.
Before you buy or rent a home at ELC, please read and then do ALL of the
following items:
Things to know:
- We are a self-managed community. We do nearly all the work.
- In order to meet community management and maintenance needs, each adult in the
community is expected to volunteer a minimum of 4 hours of community work each
month.
- ELC is a unique community where issues are discussed openly and honestly. If
you are not comfortable with this, this community may not be the place for you.
Things to do so you can learn about us and we can get to know
you:
- Attend at least one monthly general business meeting (2nd Tuesdays, 4th
Sundays).
- Attend at least one Sunday common meal and one Tuesday potluck.
- Read our Book of Commons.
- Read Cohousing: A Contemporary Approach to Housing Ourselves by
McCamant, Durrett, and Hertzman and EcoVillage Ithaca: Pioneering Sustainable
Culture by Liz Walker.
- Attend an ELC 101 discussion to learn the basics of life here.
- Spend at least one Saturday or Sunday wandering around our community and
talking to the residents.
